Director Ryan Coogler is bringing the classic 1990s TV series The X-Files back to the small screen in a reboot with a diverse cast. Debuting in 1993, The X-Files follows FBI agents Scully and Mulder as they investigate the strangest and most unusual cases the Bureau can find. Mixing thrilling paranormal stories with a twisting plot about government conspiracies, The X-Files became one of the cultural institutions of 1990s TV, and continues to have a strong fanbase over three decades later.
The X-Files ran for nine seasons and even jumped to the big screen with the 1998 film of the same name. However, seasons 8 and 9 disappointed longtime fans, since David Duchovny’s Agent Mulder left after season 7, and Gillian Anderson’s Agent Scully followed suit after season 8. Through a myriad of spinoffs, comic books, and various other forms of media, The X-Files lived on even after it was canceled. A two-season revival in 2016 brought the classic characters back, but now Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has an all-new vision for the franchise.

8 Things That Need To Happen To Make Disney’s The X-Files Reboot Work

Is an ‘X-Files’ Reboot Happening? What We Know So Far
Even Gillian Anderson still wants to believe.
- LAUREN PIESTER
- APR 3, 2024
The X-Files is positioned for a reboot 22 years after it ended the first time and six years after it ended the second time. The beloved sci-fi series premiered on Fox in 1993 and introduced the world to FBI special agents Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (David Duchovny). Mulder was a lover of conspiracy theories and the supernatural, while Scully was a doctor and a skeptic, and together they investigated seemingly inexplicable events. The series ended in 2002, and then was revived with the same stars and creator in 2016. Now, there’s talk of a whole new version of the same iconic concept from Ryan Coogler, the writer and director of the Black Panther movies.
While Cooger’s version would be a more “diverse” reimagining with a new cast, Anderson revealed on Today that she’s down to guest star as Scully. “I’m not saying no, because I think [Coogler] is really cool,” she said. “And I think if he did it, it probably would be done incredibly well. Maybe I’ll pop in for a little somethin’-somethin.’”
It’s a change of tune for Anderson, who has said since 2018 that she would probably not ever play Scully again. But all fans of The X-Files know that nothing is impossible.
Here’s everything we know about the future of The X-Files.

Is there going to be an X-Files reboot?
While Disney and Coogler haven’t made the official announcement, X-Files creator Chris Carter revealed in March 2023 that Ryan Coogler, writer and director behind the Black Panther movies, was working on a “diverse” reboot of the beloved sci-fi series. In February 2024, Carter again confirmed to The Wrap that the reboot was still on the table, but he would only be involved as a “cheerleader.” I
In an even more recent interview with Inverse, Carter said that he had had conversations with Coogler and heard his “really good ideas” for the new series, but knew that Coogler had a “hard job” ahead of him, especially given the current state of the internet. He specifically cited the Kate Middleton rumors that circulated before it was revealed that she has cancer. “Everything’s a conspiracy,” he said. “No one knows what the truth is. It’s completely subjective and relative now.”
So maybe the truth isn’t out there after all?

How did the original X-Files end?
The first time around, The X-Files was canceled after nine seasons and ended with Mulder and Scully as fugitives on the run. Mulder had broken into an army base and killed a guy, and was sentenced to death at a military tribunal. Scully helped break him out of prison and the last scene saw them hiding out in a motel room together.
In 2008, Mulder and Scully returned in a feature film called The X-Files: I Want to Believe. It was written and directed by Carter and gave some closure to the ending of Season 9. The FBI called off their hunt for Mulder in exchange for his help investigating a series of disappearances with a paranormal element, and he and Scully solved the case before, in a post credits scene, boating off together to a tropical island. The movie had very mixed reviews and currently sits at 32% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In 2016, The X-Files returned on Fox for two wild seasons that dealt with Scully’s alien son, and ended with Scully telling Mulder that she was pregnant with his child. Reviews were…not so good.
Who is in the cast of The X-Files reboot?
No cast has been announced yet, but Coogler is looking to make the show more diverse this time around.
Is Gillian Anderson in The X-Files reboot?
Anderson is not officially cast in the X-Files reboot, but she told Today in April 2024 that she wouldn’t say no to making an appearance, despite having said many times before that she likely would not play Scully again.
“Since I finished The X-Files, every interview I do people have asked, and the answer has always been, ‘Nope, not gonna happen,’” she said. “Now, Ryan Coogler, who’s a brilliant, brilliant director, has approached Chris Carter to say he wants to do a take on it, and I cannot think of a better way around a reboot. He’s a bit of a genius.”
Is David Duchovny in The X-Files reboot?
Duchovny has not yet spoken specifically about Coogler’s take on the show, but in 2022, he told Comicbook.com that he wouldn’t return to the show without both Anderson and Carter. “For me, it was always, ‘There’s no show unless it’s Chris and Gillian,’ so I don’t know,” he said when asked if he’d ever return without Scully. “I don’t want to have to think about that, because it’s not something that I necessarily need in my life…Personally, for me, the X-Files that I’m involved in consists of Chris Carter, myself, and Gillian, so I haven’t spent time trying to think about a different version of that, and I don’t know that I will.”

McHale added: “’The X-Files’ is simply one of the greatest shows ever made ever. If anyone has a problem with that, I will fight them. Believe me when I was asked to guest star on the show I thought I was being pranked. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was. The ‘X Fan Retrospective’ documentary is a captivating journey through the beloved world of ‘The X-Files,’ and I am looking forward to being part of the celebration in NYC.”
The London Action Festival was launched in 2022 by Julian Alcantara and Ron Fogelman and has had two successful editions so far, incorporating screenings, masterclasses and live events. The duo have combined again for The Action Station.
Alcantara said: “We eagerly anticipate our first NYC event, fueled by the tremendous response garnered from both editions of the London Action Festival. The positive feedback extends not only from our appreciative audiences, who value our blend of entertainment and information, but also from the content providers across the industry who have shown incredible support for our events.”
Fogelman added: “Launching The Action Station with a NYC event honoring a cultural phenomenon, featuring the extraordinary documentary, and having the participation of legendary creator Chris Carter in the event, marks a truly special beginning. We’re hard at work to craft an unforgettable night, and capture the spirit of the show and its dedicated fandom.”
The Action Station “The X-Files” event will take place May 3 at SVA Theatre in New York City.

The X-Files has an uncertain future. Chris Carter would like to continue the series. David Duchovny has said as much. Gillian Anderson, on the other hand, has not minced words: She won’t be returning to play Dana Scully. Fox has been quiet about the status of the series meaning that, barring a miracle, The X-Files are closed.
The fans, for who so long were unable to keep the spirit of the series alive even after its initial cancellation, are beginning to cope with the idea that “new X-Files” is no more. The popular fansite X-Files News said it will be scaling back on publishing in an emotional letter. My site, The X-Files Lexicon, has been resuming it’s old school analysis of the show, but due to real-life issues, it’s been a challenge to maintain steady production on the site. There are some valid reasons to raise the question: Where can fans go now?Skip Ad

Now that The X-Files season 11 is over and out on Blu-ray, and the show is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the pilot, it seemed apt to continue this series of articles that address the fandom for The X-Files. We have explored fan sites and fan-created books that were published for charity or reference, the fervency of Millennium fandom, and the personal importance of The X-Files to fans. The series and its followers created modern internet fandom, and when the series returned in 2016, it became a perfect case study in how we watch television socially.
If this is the end, will the fans continue to cherish the past as passionately as they have for 25 years? Or will they move on? Considering the mixed to negative reactions to this final season, will fans remain committed to exploring the impact and meaning of the series for future generations? That answer may be complex, but it may be less complicated when you consider all of the positive fan activity since the revival was first announced in 2015. Let’s look into those remaining aspects, and the points of view from directly involved in the show…

A Heathly X-Files Podcast Community
There’s a great deal of podcast activity diving into the world of The X-Files. The X-Files Truth Podcast gives fans the regularly scheduled programming they want.
As its lead host Agent Shadow explains, “I was inspired to create X-Files Truth because the podcast I was previously on [Reopening The X-Files] wasn’t putting out episodes on a regular basis and I felt passionately that The X-Files deserved a podcast with a regular schedule.” His points are enforced by his podcast partner, Agent Stone: “My [our] role in the XF Universe is to continue to support and introduce The X-Files to fans old and new alike. To present The X-Files in a way not done before, especially in the new media age — Twitter, Facebook, audio podcast, website, etc. The X-Files community is still thriving over two decades later and we present not just an episode overview, but a look behind the scenes… and go in-depth and beyond what The X-Files is and means to us and to others all over the world.”
Another podcast, The K-Files was created to carry on the legacy of the show.
“I was inspired to create my podcast, The K-Files to share everything about the show that originally sparked my imagination and to carry the legacy of the show onward from the old fandom into this new chapter in the show’s history,” says creator Katie Moeller. “What’s great about The X-Files is the curiosity it invokes in audiences.”
She sees her role modestly: “For my part in The X-Files fandom, I hope to perpetuate the show’s cultural legacy and bridge the gap between the massively interactive fandom in which I participated as an adolescent and the new one arising in anticipation of the miniseries.”
Katie also characterizes a good reason why fans focus so much attention on details of the show – to understand. “The true beauty of The X-Files is in all the minutiae: the tagline of an episode translated into Navajo or interpreting Mulder’s temptation dreams in “Amor Fati.” I want to ensure every decoded message and behind the scenes detail from the original run of the show is remembered in this new era.”
