Summary

  • Alan Wake 2 features dual protagonists, allowing players to switch between playing as Alan and FBI Agent Saga in their investigation of a series of murders in Bright Falls.
  • The game offers two different realities to explore: Bright Falls with its mysterious Cauldron Lake, and a twisted, neo-noir version of New York City called the Dark Place.
  • Alan Wake 2 shifts its focus towards the survival horror genre, with a stronger emphasis on building atmosphere and tension, creepier enemies, and an over-the-shoulder camera perspective, providing a more intense horror experience compared to its predecessor.

It’s been thirteen years since players first stepped foot in the mysterious world of Bright Falls, with 2021’s Alan Wake Remastered bringing improved visual fidelity and more to 2010’s original Alan Wake title. Now, players can return to Bright Falls with Remedy Entertainment’s survival horror follow-up, Alan Wake 2. Yet, players who enjoyed the original and remastered versions may be keen to know more about some of the core differences Alan Wake 2 offers.

15 Most Anticipated Games of Fall 2023

With fall 2023 quickly approaching, it’s time to look at the most anticipated games currently scheduled to release this year.

Compared to Alan Wake RemasteredAlan Wake 2 has several differences concerning gameplay, systems, narrative components, and more, beyond Alan growing a beard. A breakdown of all these features can also help new players know more about what to expect from one of Fall’s most anticipated game releases.

10Two Switchable Protagonists

alan wake 2 saga profiling

In the original Alan Wake and Remastered version, players solely stepped into the role of the namesake protagonist. However, Alan Wake 2‘s dual protagonists enable players to take on the role of Alan plus newcomer FBI Agent Saga Anderson investigating a series of murders in Bright Falls.

Horror Games Releasing In 2023 You Should Know About

2023 is looking good for horror games. Here’s which spooky games to look out for as the year progresses.

At key narrative ramp points in the game, players can also switch between playing as Saga or Alan, with Remedy letting players decide when they want to change characters at certain moments. How players experience Alan Wake 2 is likely to be somewhat different, with things in place so players don’t miss crucial parts.

9Two Realities To Explore

Alan Wake 2 gameplay

In addition to two playable characters, players can experience two different kinds of world realities. Players investigate the town of Bright Falls and Watery as Saga, the location of the original Alan Wake and its remaster. This includes the mysterious Cauldron Lake, the main focal point of Alan Wake‘s Dark Presence in Alan Wake.

When playing as Alan, players are trapped in the Dark Place, presumably at least to begin with. However, Alan Wake 2‘s Dark Place becomes a twisted, neo-noir New York City. The game also includes live-action video sequences, expanding upon similar moments seen briefly on TV screens in the original.

8Survival Horror Genre Focus

Alan Wake 2 PS5 trailer

Alan Wake 2 also switches things up with a change in genre. While Alan Wake and Alan Wake Remastered were more psychological thriller experiences with horror elements, Alan Wake 2 shifts its focus towards the survival horror game genre.

Gameplay changes include a stronger focus on building atmosphere and tension with a more intense horror experience and potentially more puzzle gameplay like Resident Evil games. Alan Wake certainly had its jump scare moments with its Taken stalking the woods and inanimate objects brought to life. However, Alan Wake 2 takes its horror vibes to the next level with creepier enemies and more.

7Over-The-Shoulder Camera Perspective

Alan Wake 2 Resident Evil inspired brighter

Although Alan Wake 2 had various inspirations from movies, TV series, and video games, the influence of games like the Resident Evil 2 Remake couldn’t be clearer, with the change to an over-the-shoulder, third-person camera perspective. This is a change from Alan Wake‘s wider, third-person perspective, immersing players closer to the action.

16 Horror Games Inspired By Silent Hill

Konami’s famed franchise inspired many horror games over the years. Here are the best titles.

Surviving Alan Wake Remastered‘s enemies relied upon shining Alan’s torch to weaken them. While these light mechanics return in Alan Wake 2, defeating enemies could feel more intense with the new gameplay perspective.

6The Dark Place

alan-wake-2-typewriter-digital-only

For the first time, players see what lurks inside the Dark Place in Alan Wake 2, the unsettling location where Wake’s wife became trapped in the original versions. The Dark Presence haunted Alan across Bright Falls and twisted the world he knew, but players never saw Alan there until now.

The Dark Place also introduces players to different ways to move between areas. In Alan Wake, Alan could clear blocked pathways using light from a torch or environmental tools. In Alan Wake 2, players can clear the path to a new area in the blink of an eye using brand-new light mechanics.

5More Open World Feel, But Not Traditionally Open World

alan wake 2 interview

Exploring the environment in Alan Wake and its remastered counterpart was a pretty linear experience, with the level design gearing players towards particular paths. Although Alan Wake 2 is not a traditional open-world video game, it features more open and explorable areas, such as the Diner area in Bright Falls.

8 Survival Horror Games That Never Left Japan

These chilling survival horror games never experienced a Western release.

Previously, players could collect hidden collectibles like Thermos Flasks and Night Springs video games, so it will be interesting to see what kinds of collectibles, secrets, or easter eggs Remedy might add to the mix in Alan Wake 2 as players explore its dual worlds.

4The Mind and Writer’s Rooms

alan wake 2 saga mind room

Alan Wake 2 introduces players to additional new mechanics called the Mind Room and Writer’s Room. These are interactive boards that players can use to help piece together what’s going on. Players use an interactive case board in Saga’s head called the Mind Room when playing as Saga to profile and connect clues gathered from the world in her investigations and unlock new objectives.

When playing as Alan in the Dark Place, players can use the Plot Board in the Writer’s Room, which exists only in Alan’s head as a metaphorical chalkboard space. Here, players can craft new stories that physically change the Dark Place, helping players unveil things like new pathways and ways forward.

3Longer Gameplay Length

alan wake 2 talk show

While Alan Wake and Alan Wake Remastered lasted approximately 11 hours of playtime, Alan Wake 2 is said to be a much longer gameplay experience, taking at least 20 hours to beat. That’s also not including Alan Wake 2‘s confirmed DLC plans, making it one of Remedy’s lengthiest titles.

5 Things Alan Wake 2 Should Take From Resident Evil 4 Remake

As the long-awaited sequel to Remedy’s popular title edges closer to release, it should look to a survival horror classic for inspiration.

DLC from the original versions also gave players more things to do, like find all the various collectibles and unlock all of Alan Wake 2‘s achievements and trophies, potentially adding even more gameplay time to the horror experience.

2Less But More Varied Combat

alan wake 2-1

Like the original games, Alan Wake 2 gives players third-person-shooter style combat, with weapons including a revolver and shotgun. However, while the originals were combat-heavy and to some extent, a little repetitive, Alan Wake 2 focuses more on building tension, with more varied combat for players and enemies.

Alan Wake 2 also looks set to add new types of equipment, like charms, which look a bit like Resident Evil 4 Remake’s charms. There may also be different kinds of flare, such as the rocket flare, as seen in Saga’s survival resources pack included in the game’s Deluxe Edition.

1New And Familiar Characters

alan wake 2 alex casey

Alan Wake 2 also introduces players to new and familiar names with its cast of supporting characters, with some key differences. For instance, for the first time, FBI Agent Alex Casey appears in the game world as Saga’s partner. Alex also shares the same name as the fictional protagonist of Alan Wake’s book in the original games.

While there are new characters, it’s possible that minor characters from the Remastered and original games could make a return, with no doubt many fans hoping for the return of characters like Barry Wheeler, Alan’s Agent, who helped provide some lighthearted, comedic relief. However, who might return, and how, remains to be seen.

The story of Hogwarts Legacy starts with our Character along with Professor Figg and his friend in the middle of Victorian London preparing to travel to Hogwarts,

It then opens to the recognisable music and warner Brothers logo.

We open to the view of a flying carriage and pan into the carriage where the characters are discussing Ranrock and the Goblin situation and pass an artefact around until our character notices a glow and the artifact opens revealing a portkey in the shape of a key suddenly the carriage is attacked by a dragon causing the first death in the game.

Revealing Thestrals which are a sing of death pulling the remainder of the carriage.

Our character and professor Figg are transported via portkey into the middle of nowhere,

Professor Figg then shows our character how to use wiggen wild potion we then walk out of the cave in the furthest part of Scotland with amazing views we proceed to follow Figg to look at the derelict castle,

This is when we start to learn basic spells as you use the spells they strengthen. We then look through artefacts and we see the Gringotts Bank through a shimmering wall.

Our character reaches out to touch it and we find ourselves in Gringotts Bank a goblin asleep sitting at his desk,

Once we wake the Goblin up, he takes us to the oldest vault in the bank but was unable to tell us what to expect you go through the first set of challenges such as learning revelio, Lumos and how to attack and raise a shield and what a pensive memory is before facing Ranrock and arriving in the forbidden forest.

We then experience an amazing intro which leads us into the sorting hat ceremony I played as Gryffindor,

Or you can link to your account or choose your own house this is where your introduced to headmaster Black and professor Weasley. It’s the Gryffindor story line I chose for this review.

We are then taken to our common room by Mrs Weasley who wishes us a wonderful first night at Hogwarts I felt a pang of disappointment that you don’t have clips from this it would have given the vibes your are involved instead of just waking up in your dorm.

Day 2

On day 2 we get to meet some of our year group and then professor Weasley introduces us to the Hogwarts Field Guide I will go more into this on my menu segment.

We then do the following lessons,

  • Défense against the dark arts
  • Charms
  • Herbology

And then we get to choose between Sebastian and Hetty to go to Hogsmeade to collect school appliances that we lost on the way to school you get into all the signature shops that we have grown to love from the films and books.

Day 3

On the third day we do Beast classes and flying along with defence against the dark arts meanwhile you meet up with professor Figg to figure out what was in the neckless from the vault in Gringotts it reveals a map that shows a pointer that only our character can see which leads to finding a book in the restricted section of the library which reveals 2 missing pages.  We then go to Herbology class learning about man eating cabbages and mandrakes as well as planting seeds, we also start to learn some backstories to the teachers.

While Professor Figg goes to the Ministry which leads us going to the Headless Hunt for help which leads us to a Tomb where you find Jack door and the 2 pages,

As you finish the last challenges in the tomb you find yourself in the map chamber and introduced to Percival who tells you to have to come back with the book,

This is where I found the game a bit odd when you go to Figg’s office to meet with the 2 missing pages from the book but what I find really strange you suddenly get circles to load instead of continuing fluently.

As a daily routine which can be frustrating and you suddenly stop using your bed,

We then start studying stargazing, divinity as we work up abilities levels we are given homework to do so that you can learn new spells for the final stand off as well as the test set out by the keepers so that your ready for the final stand.

It’s time for another Final Fantasy with the upcoming sixteenth instalment in the franchise. We only have one trailer of the game to go off so far but it is already looking spectacular with familiar Final Fantasy tropes layered with tons of political intrigue, and *gasp* an all-new M rating! It is produced by Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida of Final Fantasy XIV fame and directed by Hiroshi Takai who also worked on The Last Remnant

An all-new adventure awaits our Lombax and robot duo with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Players will get to journey around different planets and dimensions with new tools at their disposal to take down the sinister Dr. Nefarious. How exactly that plays out with the DualSense controller remains to be seen, but seeing as how load times are practically nonexistent in the PS5, players can expect some really cool interdimensional zaniness to come out of this game.

The adventure of Aloy continues with Horizon Forbidden West, where we’ll see our daring protagonist make her way to post-apocalyptic San Francisco to face new terrain, new threats and new machines. We can see Aloy swimming underwater in the trailer with a breathing mask of sorts, this could be hinting at some possible underwater sections in the game.

Fans of the movie Groundhog Day and its various permutations across all of entertainment will have a field day with Deathloop, a first-person shooter game that has you playing as an assassin stuck in, you guessed it, a time loop. Your goal is to take out the targets in an area before your loop resets. Only things aren’t as simple as it sounds. There is another assassin in this game, and the one she is hunting is… you

Ubisoft’s upcoming Far Cry 6 will see the return of the actor behind everyone’s favourite Breaking Bad and The Mandalorian villain Giancarlo Esposito as the game’s main antagonist Anton Castilla. Meanwhile, players will get to take on the role of Yaran Dani Rojas, a resistance fighter going against the dictatorship ruling the nation.
