Warning: contains Spoilers for Batman #135!Batman may protect Gotham City from its population of vicious supervillains, but fans have long theorized that the Dark Knight is the reason they exist in the first place. Now, Bruce Wayne is definitively answering this accusation, leaving no further room for doubt.
Readers get to see Batman’s expert takedown of this idea in Batman #135 (by Chip Zdarsky, Mike Hawthorne, Jorge Jimenez, Mikel Janin, Adriano Di Benedetto, Tomeu Morey, and Romulo Fajardo.) Recently, Bruce Wayne has been transported to a universe that never had a Batman. The city is overrun by criminals and the elite look down on the suffering masses, people like Harvey Dent and Punchline are in positions of power and status, as are Ghostmaker and Killer Croc. When Batman is finally able to confront Halliday, who is revealed to be a ‘sane’ version of the Joker, Halliday taunts Batman, asking him if he is haunted by the idea that he creates his villains. Bruce replies that he hasn’t believed that for years, and that this new reality proves that “a world without Batman is still a world with monsters.”
Batman Doesn’t Create His Villains (Including Joker)

Over the years, fans and some creators have explored the idea that Batman’s villains only exist because of him. Batman has been involved in the creation of numerous villains, including Joker and Two-Face. He also seems to attract damaged, dangerous people to Gotham – for example, Bane only cares about the city because he considers the Dark Knight a challenge. However, this adventure has shown that while Batman may have a place in the details of some of his villains, they’d still exist without him. Scarecrow, Riddler and Bane may have become focused on Batman, but without him, they’d simply be free to use their genius and cruelty more effectively. Even the formerly heroic Harvey Dent is still a killer in a world where he never worked alongside the Dark Knight.

Joker Isn’t Batman’s Fault

Most importantly, this world is presided over by Darwin Halliday’s Red Mask – a Joker who never encountered Batman. Not only is Halliday still a force for immense evil in Gotham; his multiversal experiments are directly responsible for creating Jokers in other realities. This world shows that Batman’s presence doesn’t pollute the soul of Gotham or make it darker, and the idea of costumed killers would exist with or without him. As the Dark Knight points out, Gotham’s villains might fixate on him, but they don’t need him to exist – they’re evil people who choose to harm others, and he’s made it his life’s mission to stop them.
Batman Is a Hero, and That’s What Matters

Some people think that Gotham City is riddled with villains because of Batman. But the truth is Batman’s villains don’t exist because of him, they exist in spite of him. While some villains, like Bane and Joker, keep returning to Gotham because of Batman, they would still exist without him, and if the Dark Knight wasn’t there to oppose them, there would be more evil in the world, not less.

The nearly 30-minute production features the likes of Michael Madsen, Doug Jones, Casper Van Dien and musician Chris Daughtry.
A Batman fan film, with a hefty budget and several surprising cameos, has gone viral. Batman: Dying is Easy went live on YouTube on Wednesday and already has more than 1.6 million views.
The impressive production from father and son Aaron and Sean Schoenke, which runs nearly 30 minutes long, enlists numerous big-name actors the likes of Michael Madsen, Doug Jones, Casper Van Dien and musician Chris Daughtry.
“Batman and Joker have always had such an interesting psychological relationship, it’s those dark concepts that make the characters so interesting,” reads the film description. A lion’s share of the film is Batman and the Joker squaring off at Arkham Asylum.
Kevin Porter plays a menacing Batman, Aaron Schoenke a maniacal Joker and Jones a remarkable Riddler, among the well-executed cast performances, including stuntwoman Amy Johnston as Harley Quinn.
The Schoenkes were able to raise more than $75,000 through the crowdfunding site Indiegogo for the project. “We want to give the fans something they’ve always craved with these characters. A psychological, dark detective story with an almost horror film feel. This film is created by fans for the fans. This film will feature all original costumes, sets, and music score!” read the Indiegogo pitch.
